middle of the map fest 2014 outfit options

Whenever I travel, I like to bring a lot of clothing options. What I think I want to wear one day, I decide I hate how it looks the next. I had a night to myself in a hotel room and decided to look at everything I brought with me and make some outfits with what I had. As a kid I used to do this with my new school clothes every summer, and here I am at 27 up to the same old shit.

packing process

Lately I've taken to making detailed lists of all of the clothing I have packed when I'm headed on a trip. Then I brainstorm outfits and draw pictures of my ideas. Tonight I'm flying with my band, Upset, to NYC. We're playing the Don Giovanni Records showcase, and two shows with Potty Mouth (one at Bard College and one at Kung Fu necktie in Philadelphia.) It's a little embarassing, but here are my sketches and lists..

First, I tried to find the colors that match my clothes.

Next, I made an itemized list of every last thing in my suitcase except toiletries (that's an entire other list that I've mostly memorized by now.)

Last, I draw up some outfit ideas! (This is the fun part.)

I like comfort when I fly, but I refuse to look sloppy in public. No pajama pants for this girl.

Oh, I also decide what color lipstick to wear. God, I'm the worst.

Ah, right. I still don't have an idea for this sweater.

Any of you guys coming to these shows? I'd really love it if you did!

Tonight Eloy, Rachel, and I went out to see Rory Scovel work on his new hour. I got two sweaters and a new
Tatty Devine sale necklace in the mail today, so I was psyched to wear my new stuff.

pre grammy game

Last night Eloy and I went to 4AD's pre-Grammy party for The National. The party was held in the Soho House in West Hollywood. It had all the makings for major social anxiety, but it wound up being really fun. I actually knew a handful of people there, and there was an open bar, so that didn't hurt. After my third champagne, I noticed Grimes standing by the bar and decided to go tell her I really admire and respect her. She was very gracious and complimented me on my hair (I guess my insane roots don't look too bad).
Sometimes you just gotta nerd out on people you look up to.

I had no idea what to wear, so I did what I always do when I need fashion advice;

We landed on my cream lace victorian style dress from River Island, nude peep toe Karen Scott t-strap heels, and my hot pink velvet coat that I actually got from Re/Dress when they were in NYC. 

It just so happens that Erin now works at Re/Dress, which has since relocated to Cleveland, OH.

We agreed I needed some sort of jewelry, but the neckline of this dress is pretty busy, and I don't do earrings,
nor do I have much of a bracelet collection. Fortunately, I remembered I have this long
Tatty Devine Honesty Seed Pod necklace from AW11.

I nearly forgot to take any pictures, until I noticed this awesome screen while we waited for our car at valet 

and coerced Eloy into snapping a couple of quick shots.

The only other picture from the night is of this floral/vaginal wallpaper in the ladies room.

cabazon dinosaurs

Eloy turned 28 yesterday, so we spent the night in Palm Springs. While we were driving back to LA I noticed the dinosaurs in the distance and said "I am VERY interested in whatever that is." Eloy asked if  he should pull over and I was like "fuck yeah!" As it turns out it was the Cabazon dinosaurs from Paris, Texas, The Wizard, and of course Pee Wee's Big Adventure. We took so many pictures of each other.

FIRST

  Hello world! I kept putting off blogging because it seems so overwhelming. There are so many things about me that you don't know! There are so many songs I like and makeup I bought and I want you all to know about it now now NOW. However, I guess the present is as good a time as any to just...start. With that, here is my very first her name is ali blog post..

I got this skirt from ASOS in the mail last week and I am finding so many different ways to wear it.

The first night out in this orangey faux leather number, I wore it with my Frances Ha jacket from River Island. Eloy gave it to me for Christmas. It's exactly what I wanted.

Did you see Frances Ha? This jacket is like a cleaner, more tailored version of 

the one Greta Gerwig wore throughout the movie.

I wore the skirt again for the first Church at the Church on York show. It's a brand new comedy/music variety show at the up and coming Church on York, hosted by my friends Sean O'Connor, Beth Stelling, Julian McCullough, and Brent Sullivan. My band, Upset, played and besides the hosts, Jenny Slate, Anthony Jeselnik, and Kumail Nanjiani performed.
